Blind Pass Dredging Project
The Lee County Department of Natural Resources has begun mobilization for the restoration and maintenance dredging of Blind Pass, Wulfert Channel and portions of Roosevelt Channel. Approximately 127,000 cubic yards of material will be removed from the pass and interior waters to restore a flushing connection to the Gulf of Mexico. For additional information regarding Lee County’s Blind Pass dredging project, please visit their website located at:
http://www.lee-county.com/NaturalResources/Beaches/Autopage_T18_R5.htm
Due to Contractor mobilization, the parking lot and restrooms located at Turner Beach are closed. Blind Pass Parking lot will remain open until further notice. Port-o-Lets are available at Blind Pass Park on Sanibel. Beachgoers are reminded Bowman’s Beach parking lot and restrooms are available during this time.
This important grant funded environmental restoration project will restore tidal flows and improve water quality for the coastal waters of both Sanibel and Captiva. It is anticipated that the project will also increase fisheries habitat, including sea grass beds, by improving water clarity.
Blind Pass Beach Advisory
The City has been informed by Mr. Robert Neal, P.E., Lee County Division of Natural Resources, that the Blind Pass dredging project is attracting sharks. He stated that this is common for beach projects around dawn and dusk of each day and that this project is more likely to attract sharks since material is being placed directly in the nearshore.
As the Project Manager, Mr. Neal is attempting to have appropriate warning signage in place in early January 2009.
Beach goers are advised to use caution in and around the water at Blind Pass.
