Complimentary Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club Diabetes Screening at the Sanibel Recreation Center on Thursday, February 11 from 10 am to 1 pm. The screening uses a tiny drop of blood extracted with an almost painless prick of the finger, which is then read by a blood glucose meter in 10 seconds. The Lion screeners have been trained and certified by a doctor and use all appropriate methods to insure antiseptic conditions and privacy during the screening. The test is appropriate for both children and adults.

Finding and treating diabetic eye disease early, before it causes vision loss, is the best way to control diabetic eye disease. Diabetic eye disease is a group of problems that people with diabetes may face. All can cause severe vision loss or even blindness. They include diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in adults. Cataracts develop at a younger age in people with diabetes. A person with diabetes is nearly twice as likely to get glaucoma as other adults. Often there are no symptoms until the disease becomes severe.
